Belgorod region is one of the flagships of Russian agriculture.

The region employs over 1.000 production complexes of poultry and pork; they produce about 15 million tons of waste per year.

The result of such enterprises is a significant amount of organic waste, the need for recycling which is one of the priorities in environmental safety of the atmosphere and land.

The total quantity of waste created by poultry and livestock enterprises in Belgorod region can produce over 500 thousand cubic meters of biogas per day.

During the processing of existing waste in livestock, poultry, sugar beet pulp production, the energy potential of the region will be more than 200 megawatts, which is fully sufficient to provide heat and electricity for rural parts of the region.

In Belgorod region was created the legislative basis for development of distributed power generation. In accordance with the enactment of the Belgorod region Government No 427 - from 29.10.2012 was approved the long-term target program "Development of renewable energy for 2013-2015 and up to 2020". According to the goal post in the region is planned to introduce 223.3 MW of alternative energy, mainly due to the biogas plants.

Over the last decade in the world was developed a technology for organic waste recycling and decentralized producing of energy from organic waste by recycling them into biogas using appropriate technological solutions as biogas plants.

This technology provides the biological processing of livestock and poultry wastes to produce biogas and biofuels.

To solve these problems is scheduled to coordinate the work of all agricultural enterprises in several ways. The first is the construction of a network of biogas plants for the processing of organic waste with moisture content greater than 50%.

Biogas is a combustible gas mixture consisting of 50-70% methane (CH4), which is formed by the organic substances due to anaerobic microbiological process.

As a raw material for the production of biogas we can use any organic waste, food production, animal breeding, agriculture, wood industry, precipitation of domestic sewage and other raw materials, that can be fermented and proceed.

One of the most promising applications of biogas is its use as a motor fuel.

The produced biogas must be enriched with methane. Then, the biomethane can be transported to the fixed or mobile service stations.

Among the proposed investment projects there are the construction of biogas plants near the working pig complexes, wastewater treatment plants, cattle and poultry complexes. Companies that produce electricity using biotechnology will be included in the register of the regional power supply companies.

In the perspective, is planned to provide a rational, economically valid growth in the use of various types of renewable energy sources for electricity and heat producing, as well as expand the use of alternative fuels for transport and energy.
